Engineering Breakdown

Each preset is converted from millimetres to pixels at 300 DPI (px = mm ÷ 25.4 × 300), so 35×45 mm becomes 413×531 px and the US 2×2 in visa format is exactly 600×600 px. The photo is framed with a cover-fit transform plus your zoom and drag offsets, clamped so the frame is always filled. Background replacement is a border-seeded flood fill: the median colour of the image border is sampled, and every connected pixel within your RGB-distance tolerance is made transparent with a 3×3 feathered alpha edge, then the chosen colour is painted underneath. Clothing templates are vector SVGs rasterised on demand and drawn with translate, rotate and scale transforms so you can align the collar. The print sheet tries portrait and landscape 4×6 in canvases (1200×1800 or 1800×1200 px) with several margins, keeps the layout that fits the most photos, and patches the JPEG JFIF header to 300 DPI so print software reads the correct physical size.

Optional size limiting runs a binary search over JPEG quality until the file falls under your KB limit — useful for government upload portals.

How to use it in 3 steps

  1. Upload a front-facing portrait, pick your country preset, then drag and zoom until your face fits the dashed guide.
  2. Choose a background colour (enable background replacement for non-plain backdrops) and optionally add a suit, tie or blazer and align it on the collar.
  3. Download the single photo, or the 4×6 inch 300 DPI sheet and take it to any photo studio or print it at home.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an Indian passport photo in pixels?

An Indian passport photo is 35 × 45 mm, which equals 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI. Choose the India preset and the tool crops to exactly that size.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. All cropping, background replacement and sheet creation happen in your browser canvas. The image never leaves your device.

Will background replacement work on any photo?

It works best on plain, evenly lit backgrounds. It removes background pixels connected to the image border that match the sampled colour, so busy or gradient backgrounds may need a higher tolerance or a retake against a wall.

Are the clothing overlays official-compliant?

Overlays are simple generic templates meant for casual or application use. Always check the rules of your issuing authority; many agencies forbid digitally altered clothing.

How do I print the photos at a studio?

Download the 4×6 inch sheet. It is 1200×1800 pixels with 300 DPI metadata, which is the standard print-lab size, so photos print at their true physical dimensions.
